In 1945, Barney Godwin and Johnny Singer created a machine and engine repair shop at Burlington Avenue in Saint Petersburg. A shop that over the years evolved to include a parts department, a crank shaft business, and a warehouse. After a long 37 years in business, Singer and Godwin sold the company to the people that learned the job from them.Richard Spencer, who was born in St. Petersburg and Steve Trimm, a New Yorker, bought the company in 1982 after having worked there for 26 years. In honor of the creators, they kept the name of Godwin-Singer Inc. Two more machinists work at this company for the past 15 years now, along with Steve Trimm's son who will probably be the next generation of owning this great brand name.
Godwin-Singer Inc. has always been a family affair. It is not run under the general boss-employee concept. It is probably this kind of relationship that has kept it running for 70 years with a prospect to keep still running for another 70.
The evolution of engines has made the owners evolve themselves. Much humor is involved when Steve Trimm says that engines are now much more complicated than what they were a few years back, because of the implementation of computer systems. However, this has not stopped them from being able to deliver the same level of services they always did.
